World Optometry Week
This week we celebrate World Optometry Week. We use this time to raise awareness of the importance of regular eye exams. Eye exams don’t only help diagnose and treat vision-related conditions but may help diagnose systemic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.
Diabetes and Vision
Poorly controlled diabetes can have a devastating effect on vision. The effects can range from fluctuating vision to complete, irreversible blindness. Fluctuating vision (some days clear, some days blurry, with the same spectacles or even without spectacles) is one of the telltale signs of fluctuating blood glucose levels, please don’t ignore this sign as a […]
Signs That You Need To Have Your Eyes Tested.
A lot of people assume you only need to go to the optometrist when your vision is blurry. While this is one of the most common reasons people consult, here are others that you may not be aware of: Constant Headaches Conditions such as astigmatism, farsightedness, accommodation (focusing) difficulties, and binocular vision (the ability of […]
Year End Update
There’s still time to get your eye exam done before the end of the year. Contact us to book your appointment, to order contact lenses, spectacles or to purchase sunglasses. We close for the year on the 17th of December and we’ll reopen on the 3rd of January.
EyeCare Awareness Month
It is EyeCare Awareness Month and this year the theme is “LOVE YOUR EYES”. Here are a few tips to help you do just that: Get your eyes tested regularly to make sure any sight threatening conditions are caught early. Wear UV protection at all times, whether as sunglasses, prescription sunglasses or blue coated spectacles. […]
Dry Eye Syndrome
Dry eye syndrome Dry eye syndrome is a chronic lack of lubrication on the surface of the eye, resulting in dry and uncomfortable eyes. It may occur at any age, but is more common in older people, menopausal women in particular. It may be caused by insufficient tear production or excessive tear evaporation. Excessive evaporation […]
Fluctuating Vision
Vision that fluctuates may be due to a variety of conditions. One of the first things I think of when I get a complaint of fluctuating vision is systemic conditions, more especially Diabetes. If you find that sometimes your vision is ok, other times it’s not, sometimes you need your specs, other times you don’t, […]
Diabetes Care
Diabetes remains one of the most common chronic conditions I come across in the office. A lot of people are struggling with it because to properly control the condition, a lot of lifestyle changes need to occur. It is not enough to simply take the medication prescribed, diet needs to change too. Reducing your “white” […]
“I can see, so my eyes are fine, right?”
We often use our vision to judge the health of our eyes, incorrectly assuming everything is okay just because we can see. A lot of South Africans believe what happens at the licensing department is an eye test, and therefore assume all is well when they “pass”. What they do there is just a […]
Blurry Vision Due to Diabetes
There are many conditions that can result in blurry vision, some are life and sight threatening, others can be resolved with spectacles and or eye drops. One of the most common and serious causes is Diabetes. Blurry vision is often one of the first warning signs of diabetes. Your vision may be blurry because fluid […]
